Shabbat Message 10.31.2025

Standing Together Through Challenging Times

Many of you have heard that the ongoing government shutdown may soon affect SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. As of November 1, SNAP benefits will pause, cutting off a support that helps families put food on the table.

We know that moments like these can be devastating for families and individuals who depend on these benefits, and that even a brief disruption can cause significant hardship. And once again, we’re reminded of how vital it is that we continue to look out for one another.

If SNAP benefits are withheld next week, the Jewish Federation of Detroit will be there—stepping in to make sure our Jewish community members, including staff at our schools and agencies, don’t go hungry. Working closely with Jewish Family Service and Yad Ezra—agencies that assist with food insecurity in our community— we’re ready to provide emergency funding and additional food distributions to keep this lifeline intact for those who need it. We are aware of government efforts to address this issue, and we remain prepared to respond if the situation is not resolved.

If  you or someone you know utilizes SNAP benefits, please use the following link to learn more or apply for Jewish Family Service’s distribution of emergency food benefits: https://www.jfsdetroit.org/foodhelp

This is what it means to be part of a caring Jewish community. It’s what our Federation is here for: to take care of one another, to stand strong in uncertain times and to make sure no family is ever alone.

Our ability to respond in moments like this is only possible because of the compassion and generosity of more than 10,000 donors, as well as the support of our community foundations. We are profoundly grateful for your partnership and your faith in our work.

As Shabbat begins, may its peace fill our hearts and renew our strength for the week ahead. Together, we’ll continue to build a community that not only takes care of its people, but also lifts them up — with hope, dignity and love.
