Abstract

In this oral history interview, Edward Meer talks about his childhood, teen years and about his time in the Marine Corps during World War II. He mentions that he went to school in a predominantly non-Jewish neighborhood and met Jewish kids later in high school.

Meer discusses memories of his grandparents, from both side of his parents’ families and speaks about some trips he has taken with his family to see their old villages and were even to find some of his family’s gravestones.  He mentions that when his parents came to the US, they got involved with B’nai Moshe.  He remembers his mother always being charitable and keeping a blue box for donations.  He discusses attending Hebrew school and going to camp.

Mr. Meer then talks about his experiences in combat for two and a half years while he served for the Marine Corps during World War II.   He relates a few war stories and mentions an instance of anti-Semitism that he remembers.

After returning home after serving, Meer worked at his father’s business, Meer Dental.  He talks about the decision to sell the business and a deal he had made with God that if his stocks went up, he would donate it to charity.

Meer talks about the things he has been able to help finance in the Jewish community, such as a remodel of the Orthodox school, Darcha Torah, gyms for Akiva and Beth Yehuda, and as well as the Meer Apartments.  He also mentions the Circle of Friends building, and a Yad Ezra building for which he helped pay.

Finally, Meer talks about his current marriage and his relationships with his children and grandchildren.
