Michael A. Maddin was born on May 18, 1940 to Milton and Esther Maddin.
Maddin is President Emeritus, a shareholder, Executive Committee member and a founder of the firm of Maddin, Hauser, Wartell, Roth and Heller, P.C. He has been practicing law for over 45 years, all the while dedicating himself to a personal mission of community service and philanthropy. Cited often for his leadership skills, along with his ability to empower and inspire others, Maddin has played an active role in the expansion and success of numerous communal, charitable and fraternal organizations, which include: State Bar of Michigan, The United Jewish Foundation, and Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, The Jewish Fund, Fresh Air Society, Hillel Day School, University of Michigan Hillel, Franklin Hills Country Club, Hospice of Michigan, and Machpelah Cemetery Association.
President of the United Jewish Foundation from 1994 to 1997 and chair of its Endowment Fund, Maddin was named recipient of the 1998 Endowment Achievement Award of the Council of Jewish Federations/ United Jewish Appeal Partnership. Under his leadership, the fund experienced record growth and furthered the development of agency endowment programs.
Within the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Maddin has held the office of president of the Junior Division and is recipient of both the William H. Boesky Memorial Award and the Frank A. Westerman Award for Young Leadership. He has also taken on leadership roles within Federation’s Annual Campaign. An ardent supporter of Israel and past chair of Federation’s Missions Committee, Maddin has accompanied hundreds of Detroiters on missions to Israel.
Throughout his long association and with Fresh Air Society, as a board member, an officer, and as president (1983-1985), Maddin has always worked on behalf of our community’s camps as if they were his own. With the strong belief that no child should be deprived of a Jewish camping experience for lack of funds, Maddin led the charge to establish new precedents for endowment. Fresh Air Society was the first agency to create endowments directed specifically to programming. Together with his wife, Donna, he founded the Michael and Donna Family Camp program, welcoming families to spend quality time together in an enriching environment. In 2000, the program was expanded to the Grand Resort at Mullett Lake. The Maddins have also funded the Maddin Fitness Center and Physical Fitness Course and the water skiing program at Camp Maas.
With a passion for history from his undergraduate days at University of Michigan, Maddin has played an active role in the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives and the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, where he served as president and was named the recipient of the Leonard N. Simons History award.
