Abstract
In this oral history interview, Paula Glazier talks about her childhood. She remembers being a member of Shaarey Zedek and the building on Chicago Blvd. being built.
She talks about how her family has a long line of philanthropy, starting with hearing stories of her grandfather starting a Conservative shul in Portland, Maine. Her mother was active with Hadassah and her father’s cousin had a part in the founding of the Detroit chapter of Friends of ALYN Hospital in Jerusalem.
Glazier mentions that when she had kids, she stopped her career as an attorney to spend more time with her family and ended up joining ORT, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women and finally, Federation. She talks about some of the mentors she had encountered in Federation. She also talks about some of the committees she volunteered with in Federation.
Glazier speaks about her children and husband’s involvement with philanthropy and the Jewish community, and she talks about getting young women involved. She talks about education programs for women and trips to Israel. She describes being on a trip to Israel during the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City.
From here, Glazier talks about her various positions held within Federation and some of the other organizations she is active in. She talks about the challenges in getting other people involved and educated. Finally, she talks about how she believes men and women solicit differently and her hopes for the future of Women’s Philanthropy.
History of Narrator
Paula Glazier was born in Portland, Maine and moved to Detroit with her family when she was five years old. She is a graduate of University of Michigan, where she majored in social work, and obtained a law degree University of Detroit.
Glazier served as the Campaign Chair of the Detroit Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy. She has also held the title of President in MI Region of Women’s American ORT, Detroit Friends of ALYN Hospital, a member of the board of trustees for Congregation Shaarey Zedek, and Israel Bonds Women’s Division.
She has two daughters with her husband, Louis Glazier.
