Abstract


In this oral history interview, Marcie Orley talks about her life growing up and the importance of philanthropy in her family.

 

She discussed how she became active in the community and her experience with her husband in the Young Leadership Cabinet.  Orley also mentions their involvement with Partnership 2000. She then speaks about what led her to become president of Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy and the influence of her parents.  She briefly talks about her experience as campaign chair and talks about her mentors and the staff she has worked with.  Orley mentions some of her achievements and the work she has done since her presidency.  Then, she speaks about her family’s involvement in philanthropy. Orley talks about the differences in the way men and women solicit

The interview ends with Orley speaking about the Jewish Women’s Foundation, and how Women’s Philanthropy has changed over the years.

History of Narrator


Marcie Hermelin Orley was born in Detroit to Doreen and David Hermelin.  She earned a BA at New York University and then graduated magna cum laude from Cardozo School of Law.

Marcie is a Past President of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Women’s Philanthropy and served as Campaign Chair. She was instrumental in the creation of the Mosaic Mission, a women’s only mission to Israel.

Marcie was the 2017 and 2018 Campaign Co-Chair of the Detroit Federation’s Annual Campaign and her service includes the Federation’s Israel and Overseas Committee, the Jewish Women’s Foundation, the Federation’s Board of Governors, and the Planning and Allocations Steering Committee.

Nationally, Marcie has served on the National Women’s Philanthropy Board and the UJA Young Leadership Cabinet, serving as the Midwest Regional Campaign Chair.  She chaired JFNA’s National Federation/Agency Alliance from 2014- 2017.

In 1997, Marcie’s communal work was recognized with the Sylvia Simon Greenberg Young Leadership Award by the Detroit Jewish Federation.

She and her husband, Robert, have four children.
