Abstract

In this interview, Dr. Lynda Giles talks about her early childhood and her memories of being brought up in a neighborhood that was predominantly Jewish. She briefly mentions her parents and her grandparents.

From here, she speaks about her education, both secular and Jewish.  She mentions joining BBG and holding leadership positions at that time in her chapter.  Later, Giles relates some memories of teaching at a grammar school after college in England where Jewish girls were a minority. To her, this was an eye-opening experience.

Giles speaks of her experiences of visiting Israel for the first time in 1964.  She talks about her first marriage, her divorce, and then her subsequent move back to Detroit where she met and married her next husband, Conrad Giles.  Because of her life experiences, she mentions that when she got her PhD, she did her dissertation on Jewish single mothers.

At this point in the interview, Giles talks about her involvement in creating Jewish Experiences for Families with Harlene Appleman, her involvement with the Alliance for Jewish Education, and a program for preschool children under the Hermelin Davidson Millennium Fund.

When asked about the changes within the Agency for Jewish Education over the years, Giles speaks about the disabled population, and the Opening the Doors program. She mentions her grandfather being a mentor in her life.

At the end of the interview, Giles talks about a future family mission she is planning on doing, and an upcoming Jewish demographic study.  She talks about the changed status of women over the years and leaves a message for the future to protect the environment.
