It’s Women’s History Month! This month honors the contributions of women in American history. Here, in the Archives, we are always celebrating the work of women in Jewish Detroit, so choosing one image was hard! Can you idenify the year of this photo? Here are some clues:
- Kids, that object that the woman on the left is holding…that’s what phones used to look like before cells. And though you might not have noticed, it’s a rotary. It wouldn’t be long, though, until she was trading it in for a push button phone.
- That car outside of the window? We can’t quite tell what it is. Oldsmobile, Mercury, Studebaker? One thing is for sure, it is definitely not a Corvette, which debuted the same year.
- These three women are promoting the upcoming Women’s Division program, G-Day (Giving Day). Sadly, we only know them as (from left) Mrs. Bernard Rubiner, Mrs. Ralph Pierce, and Mrs. Felix Mahler, since women at the time were typically known by their husband’s name in public instead of their own.
So, what’s your guess? Read to the bottom to find out.
This is just one of many images depicting the hardworking women of Jewish Detroit.
