EmpowHER Detroit

Presented in partnership with NEXTGen Detroit and Jewish Working Women’s Network

Join us as we hear firsthand about the triumphs and challenges of young, female entrepreneurs in the City of Detroit. Four boss ladies with Detroit-based businesses will represent at this panel discussion, moderated by Stacy Goldberg, Founder and CEO of Savorfull. Stick around for a Q & A with the panelists, light refreshments and the opportunity to network with fellow female professionals.

Meet the Panelists:
Rachel Lutz
Owner, Peacock Room, Frida, Yama
Rachel Lutz is a fourth-generation business owner in Detroit with retail spaces in The Park Shelton and The Fisher Building. Lutz is also an avid preservationist, a board member at Pewabic Pottery and former advanced staff for the White House during the Clinton administration.

Paulina Petkoski
Co-Founder & Owner, Playground Detroit
Paulina Petkoski is a Detroit-based social entrepreneur and co-owner of PLAYGROUND, a creative agency and art gallery to develop opportunities for creative professionals and artists to empower Detroit’s creative economy. She currently works with various creatives and clients to execute diverse initiatives throughout the city.

Samantha Schefman
Co-Founder & Owner, Playground Detroit
Born in New York City and raised in Metro Detroit, Schefman has her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing at the College for Creative Studies. In 2009, she moved begin her career in NYC designing jewelry and watches for brands including Betsey Johnson, Gwen Stefani and Henri Bendel. Her passion and knowledge of the art world led to her role as the Gallery Manager of Mike Weiss Gallery Manhattan. In 2015, Schefman returned to Detroit to continue her work with PLAYGROUND DETROIT.

Nia Batts
Co-Founder & CEO, Detroit Blows
Nia is currently the Co-Founder & CEO of Detroit Blows, a non-toxic blow dry salon. She is also the Chair of its affiliated philanthropic arm, Detroit Grows, which makes microgrants to Detroit-based female entrepreneurs, and to programs helping women enter or reenter the workforce.

Katy Cockrel
Co-Founder, Detroit Blows
Katy, along with partner and co-founder, Nia Batts, developed the concept for the city’s first-ever single service, dual process, socially conscious blowdry salon. She also helms integrated communications efforts for the business, taking the lead on PR and marketing efforts designed to garner awareness and drive traffic to the salon’s downtown Detroit storefront. In addition to her role at Detroit Blows, she currently serves as a vice president at Finn Partners, a New York-headquartered agency with a Detroit-based office.

Rohani Foulkes
Co-Owner, The Farmers Hand
Hailing from Cairns, Australia, Rohani worked as a professional chef for over 10 years before earning a bachelor’s degree in Design Technology & Vocational Education and a Master’s degree in International Education and Policy Development. Her commitment to honest wholesome food for all (along with some influence from her Michigan born husband) led her to Detroit where she joined the team at Gleaner’s Community Food Bank and eventually opened The Farmers Hand, a gourmet grocery and take-out counter.

Kiki Louya
Co-Owner, The Farmers Hand
Kiki is a Detroit native, a graduate of The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Chicago. She is dedicated to providing a simple, healthier way for people to shop. Her mission? To make real food — food without artificial ingredients and wholesome, honest local products — accessible to all.

We can accommodate a very limited number of walk-ins, so please register in advance.
Parking is free on Gratiot and all surrounding side streets.
