Join NEXTGen Detroit and Repair the World for a screening of the short documentary, Refugee Kids: One Small School Takes on The World to benefit Freedom House in Detroit.
Refugee Kids is a 40-minute documentary about a New York City summer school for newly arrived children escaping war and crisis. It has been screened by community groups across the country, where it has been effective in putting a human face on the refugee story and prompting meaningful discussions around refugees in our communities.
Freedom House is a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world who are seeking asylum in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to uphold a fundamental American principle, one inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, of providing safety for those “yearning to breathe free.”
Guided by our belief that all people deserve to live free from oppression and to be treated with justice, compassion and dignity, we offer a continuum of care and services to our residents as well as to other refugees in need. We advocate for systemic change that more fully recognizes the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
Unfortunately, they recently lost almost 60% of their funding that, in the past, came from the department of Housing and Urban Development. Freedom House is trying to raise money to continue their services and they need our help! Their goal is ambitious: to raise $100,000 by April 1. This will ensure that they can continue their services through the end of the year after their current HUD grant ends on March 31, providing them time to pursue their appeal to HUD and secure the larger institutional gifts that will ensure our long-term sustainability.
