How Federation Extends the Reach of Jewish Detroit Through JDC
At the Jewish Federation of Detroit, caring for the Jewish people means showing up wherever help is needed, whenever it matters most. That responsibility extends far beyond our local community through global partners like the JDC.
For Federation supporters, this partnership reflects a core Jewish value: kol Yisrael arevim zeh la-zeh, all Jews are responsible for one another. Through JDC, we help support people facing trauma, displacement and isolation, from Israel to Eastern Europe and beyond.
As one of Federation’s core overseas partners, JDC delivers humanitarian aid, supports vulnerable populations and helps sustain Jewish life in communities around the world. Operating in dozens of countries, its work spans emergency relief, elder care, trauma support and assistance for Jews displaced by war and instability, while also addressing poverty and isolation and strengthening communities so they can move forward.
“JDC allows our community to be present in places we could never reach on our own,” said Jennifer Levine, Federation’s Senior Director of Israel & Overseas. “It transforms the generosity of Jewish Detroit into real support for people facing extraordinary challenges and helps ensure Jewish life continues, even in the most difficult circumstances.”
That impact shows up in both urgent moments and everyday realities. In Israel, nearly 19,500 frontline professionals have been trained and supported through JDC since October 7, and they are now working directly with families navigating trauma and instability. In Ukraine, that support can mean homecare visits, food deliveries and companionship for older adults left isolated by war. In Moldova, it can mean temporary shelter, meals and community support for families forced to flee with almost no warning. In places where resources are limited, that support restores stability and reinforces a simple but powerful truth: no one is alone.
When Federation invests in partners like JDC, it reinforces something essential: Jewish Detroit is part of a global people with a shared responsibility and a shared future. It means that gifts made in Detroit help deliver emergency aid, care for isolated older adults and support Jewish communities facing war, displacement and deep poverty far beyond our city.
