Wishing Our Seniors a Sweet New Year, Delivering Packages from TOV

August 28, 2013 | Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit

RH2013_Web_EventsOn a warm Thursday morning in August,160 volunteers gathered to pack and deliver Rosh Hashanah gift bags from Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Department. The Rosh Hashanah Packages Program is an annual project of the Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) Committee with the goal to reach out to our community’s seniors to spread some New Year’s sweetness.

In less than two hours, 600 holiday bags were packed, thanks to an energetic and enthusiastic group of adults and children. Following the program, volunteers delivered the bags to Jewish seniors residing predominantly in non-Jewish facilities throughout the community.  Included were 41 facilities (outside of the Jewish Senior Life umbrella), 85 recipients of kosher Meals on Wheels and 26 home-bound seniors. The TOV Committee’s next event, the Chanukah Packages Program is scheduled for Sunday, November 24th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
