Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan Grows Jewish Life throughout the State

June 28, 2013 | Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit

The Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan, also known as HCAM, is an alliance of campus Hillel’s located throughout Michigan building dynamic and vibrant Jewish communities for college students. HCAM services students at Alma College, Albion College, Central Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Kalamazoo College, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Western Michigan University, and most recently, Eastern Michigan University.

HCAM helps students develop their vision of Jewish life by providing advisement, leadership development, programming assistance and financial support. Additionally, students on all HCAM campuses are provided the opportunity to travel to Israel on Taglit-Birthright Israel, to give back to communities in need on Alternative Breaks, and to explore and expand their own personal development through national conferences and trainings. With the development and growth of this alliance of Hillel’s, these campuses have seen a boom in Jewish life. Notable programs this past year include an Israel Peace Week at Western Michigan University, a Genocide Awareness Night at Grand Valley State University and a Hanukkah Festival Celebration at Central Michigan University. It is estimated that, this past year alone, over 2,500 students have participated in an HCAM sponsored program, initiative or trip.

In previous years, many of the schools that fall under the HCAM family were underserved. Lacking any true support, these students were given few opportunities to incorporate Judaism into their college lives. Thanks to the support of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Women’s Philanthropy, and generous donors and friends, these students are finally receiving the resources they need to flourish on campus. To those of you who have invested with us in building Jewish life on the many HCAM campuses, thank you. Your ongoing partnership is helping to strengthen and grow our Jewish future.
