Alliance Scores Another Hit with “Savta Goose on the Loose”
September 9, 2013 | Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
Once upon a time, there was a great opportunity to bring an early childhood educator and speaker to Detroit. We invited her to come to town for a day-long workshop at the end of August. We thought due to the timing, we would call it a success if 15 educators attended. Boy, did we underestimate the fact that our community loves to learn!
On Monday, August 26, the Alliance for Jewish Education in partnership with PJ Library and the Ravitz Foundation, hosted Savta Goose on the Loose with Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen. This day-long workshop, focused on early childhood literacy, was attended by 125 early childhood educators and Jewish education professionals from the Metropolitan Detroit area.
Due to the fact that we usually do not host a major professional development conference until the Fall and many of our early childhood centers were preparing to start classes, we thought this would be a “bonus” workshop a few people may attend. A lot of resources and manpower had to come together to pull this off to the extent necessary to accommodate our quickly expanding response.
About our guest speaker:
Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen has been a children’s librarian for more than 25 years, and has worked in public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, non-profit libraries, children’s museums, preschools, home-daycares and more. Her wealth of personal experience combined with a passion for giving all children equal chances to be successful has led to the development of the Mother Goose on the Loose early literacy program, as well as the publication of several books.
