Jewish Apartments & Services Hechtman Fire Relief FundUpdate: May 19, 2008The JAS staff continues to work at an amazing pace to meet the needs of the displaced residents as well as continuing regular operations of the other 6 buildings. All of the former Hechtman II residents are now living at other senior living communities. As part of the ongoing efforts to keep the displaced residents in touch with JAS until the building is habitable again, JAS will be bringing them back to Hechtman once a month for reunion parties. JAS is providing bus transportation and food. The first one is planned for May 28. The first “rebuilding phase” is already underway, with the removal all the damaged material from the building. This process is expected to take approximately 3 months to complete and is necessary before any rebuilding can take place. Hechtman Fire Relief Fund: To date JAS has raised $ 151K for the Hechtman Fire Relief Fund. This includes the assistance from Federation with the Board of Governors vote to allocate 50K from the general fund in additional to 50K from a private donor. JAS is grateful for the amazing community support during this difficult time. April 9, 2008Nearly 100 elderly residents lost their homes and belongings on April 9 when a devastating fire engulfed Hechtman II on April 9 on the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus in West Bloomfield. The Jewish Apartments & Services’ staff and local firefighters are to be commended for the superlative way that they handled the crisis, rescuing all the residents whose average age is 89. Many Jewish communal agencies also responded to the crisis, assisting the residents and JAS staff that day and afterwards. It was amazing to see the outpouring of help and support from our Jewish community. To date, there have been sufficient donations of household goods and clothing. What are very much needed are monetary donations to meet the financial needs of the residents as they secure new living arrangements. To assist the agency in meeting these needs, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit has established the Hechtman Fire Relief Fund and is accepting donations that will be given to the agency to benefit the displaced residents and aid in the recovery.
